A "Converstion on Leadership" with Carla Fischer

May 15, 2016
In his column, CNY Conversations, Syracuse Media Group's Stan Linhorst interviews Carla Fischer for her insights on Leadership and Change.  Here is an excerpt:

What advice would you give a new leader or someone aspiring to a leadership role?
The most important thing is you know yourself and understand what motivates you. What are your strengths and what are your development areas?

I tell people: Whatever is your greatest strength is also your biggest liability. Some people aren't aware of how that impacts their relationships. For example, I have a tremendous amount of energy and enthusiasm, and that's a wonderful thing, especially when I'm in front of a classroom. But sometimes my energy and enthusiasm get me in trouble -- it's annoying to people because I come on so strong.

If you know your strengths and your liabilities, you can surround yourself with people who can offset them. If you're a leader and you're building a team, if you don't know yourself well, you might hire people just like you. That's great for a while, because you're always going to agree and get along. But you need to see things from a different perspective. In the end, you're going to make better decisions because you work things through.
